Crystal Lake to Windy Gap – June 19, 2011

Today was pretty nice – went out to the beach in Canandaigua for a bit, then stopped for lunch down there, on top of doing some garden work and generally puttering around the house. The first tomato turned red today, so here is hoping that there are continuous fresh tomatoes from now until October! Two weeks to go; most of the details have been hammered out, so I think we’re good. We’re getting the leaded glass sidelight windows repaired, so, one step at a time to keeping everything in the house shipshape.
Now, back to a hike we did in the mountains north of LA, some three solid summers ago…man, that summer was packed!

Lake Arrowhead – June 4, 2011

We went out to California for about four days. Flew into Oakland, drove down the coast, spent a beautiful weekend in the redwoods in the Santa Cruz Mountains seeing many friends and sharing in Dave and Iris getting married. We then headed back north, took a nice walk in the hills, got a ride in a Model S from Dan and Marina, went back to Oakland, spent the evening with yet more friends, had pizza and watched youtube videos, and then finally, the next morning, took in some quality Ikea time, followed by an In’N’Out visited before flying back home. Whew! Quite the weekend, and maybe in another three years I’ll write it up with photos 😉 For now…home again, home again, putting the house in order, and beginning the real clock to our own wedding. So…let’s talk about a little day trip to Lake Arrowhead we took a few years ago 🙂 We just needed / wanted to get away a little bit, so we drove up and up the hill to Lake Arrowhead, and found what we could find…

WA and Olympic Peninsula, May 2011 – Part the Third, Backpacking

Summer has come waltzing in, and it seems to be a pretty hot week here. I like it. My plants are growing well – the tomatoes and cucumbers and peppers are all flowering. It’s getting pretty close to wedding season, and between that and the house, we haven’t managed to go out and do all that much so far this season (though we did manage to make it out to Corbett’s Glen Nature Park for an hour or two today. Hooray!). We’ve stained and sealed some borrowed patio furniture, which is kind of like going camping, except entirely different. So let’s keep on talking about doing some camping in Washington 🙂 After some travel and photo interlude, we set on out up the Quinault River…

Let’s go backpacking!

WA and Olympic Peninsula, May 2011 – Part the First

Well, it’s still May, so if I get this out soon, I’ll still be on track to post at least once a month, though still so very far short of my desire to try and catch up with at least a post a week. Oh well. We’ve moved into our new house, and I went to California, and the weather turned amazing, which basically means we’ve been mowing the lawn. And I’ve been luxuriating in the fact that the outside has not been trying to cause me to suffer, which is really rather refreshing.

Anyway, however, let me travel briefly back in time…about three years, actually. This trip included my birthday in the Washington rain forest (next post), which was all in all not a bad place for it.

Let me set off on a trip…

Malibu Parks – March 27, 2011

Man. March in western NY is way freaking colder than in California. Not that I miss it or anything. Wait now… Anyway. Packed the first box today…I mean, moving in like 6-10 weeks, so, sure. Why not. The owner of our current rental has been getting it painted for the last week, so it’s looking all new and fresh. Anyway, time to delve into the past, for a good day out in the Santa Monica Mountains.

We had a day! I’m not sure how I picked these places (…I’m not even 100% sure I picked them in advance), but either way, Nathan and Greg and I headed out to some of the various parks in an around Malibu (fine, closer to Agoura Hills…), as most of the Angeles were still closed off after the Station Fire. We hit up Paramount Ranch (which is actually part of the Santa Monica Mountains NRA), and Malibu Creek State Park. Afterwards we got some food and beer, and all in all had a pretty fine. day.

Note – there are to be no martinis, do you hear me? None.
