October 12, 2008 Geocaching

Well, I’ve enjoyed geocaching a bit ever since I got my GPS a few years back, but it’s generally been something I’ve done as an add-on to hiking, or finding the occasional urban cache. But one day this gentleman Tobias sent out mail to the Caltech Alpine Club asking if anyone wanted to go out for an actual day of geocaching, and I went. Erin came as well, and we went around to several places that I probably would not have stopped to look at otherwise.

oh-noes
Not so much of a problem today.

Ok. The memories of this are (as always, when I get to writing these) somewhat faded, but moreover, in this case I didn’t do too detailed a writeup at the time. From looking at my find logs, we tried to find 6 different caches, and found only 3. However, I believe the first cache we set out to do was a multi parter up Route 39. We pulled over into this lot at the side, and spent a fair bit of time looking for part 1 – which we never did find. But we saw some ducks, and stared at a bridge.

Other ones we looked for had us near a golf course, a mormon church (where we loitered for quite some time in their parking lot , to no avail…not sketchy at all), hanging out next to a reservoir, and in a rock field next to a walking/biking path. I think that while the frustrating ones were frustrating, it was still pretty cool to get out and about.

Possibly the most interesting however was the one that took us out to the Fairmount Cemetery. This is sort of a middling old, but seemingly abandoned, small cemetery, much less groomed than what you would expect of your forest lawn. There is no real access to it, we ended up walking bye/near/past some new construction, but really, we sort of randomly parked and walked.

I would never in a lifetime have come to this place otherwise, so I was glad this cache took me there.

After that was another unsuccessful find, in a neighborhood where obviously pedestrians weren’t very welcome.

After which we ended the day by going to In’N’Out, being suckered by what was apparently an abandoned dog, and having to take the poor pup to the shelter 🙁 🙁 Ah…a fascinating day, all in all. And anyone who abandons animals deserved punishment.
