Boston – June / July 2011

Hey now! I got married. It was a whole thing. I had fun. I hope the guests did too.
Anytoodles…let’s put up a few pics, eh? Not from the wedding, I don’t really have any yet 🙂

Just a few memories from one of my work trips to Boston, end of June 2011.

Welcome Extreme Sailing!

When the Nokia office was the Nokia office (before it was the HERE office), and when it was still in downtown Boston (and not at the foot of the Longfellow Bridge in Cambridge), I would stay at the hotel in Boston, and walk around a bit in the mornings. Sometimes I would just see things that entertained me :

I should get that over our front door at home

I also took the opportunity to go to the JFK National Historical Site, in scenic Brookline. It is the house he grew up in, and has various information about him and his family, but most of the story I found most gripping was about his mother, Rose. They tell the history of the house through her memories, and it is so powerful. She married, quickly realized her husband was cheating, tried to go home, was sent back by her Catholic parents, stayed with him, and had *three* sons die too young, two of whom were assassinated, not to mention her daughter’s lobotomy, and all the later years of the Kennedy clan. I simply can’t even begin to imagine, and her history resonated with me so deeply.

There is a regular guestbook for visitor’s – this one is instead there to gather memories

childs-table
The children’s table. Much beyond that size, apparently you were to be at dinner, on time. Not on time, no dinner. Discussion would be all levels of politics.

big-flag
Boston coming up to the Fourth of July believes in big flags. Note that that is about 3.5 stories tall.

And…the other neat thing I did this trip (other than, you know, work, and seeing friend!) was go trap shooting. Clayton and Jim were kind enough to take me with them. The first round, most of the old dudes just hanging out didn’t talk to me much; after the first round though, it turned into a grand-dad fest, and they all seemed to want to jump in to give me advice. One handed me his gun and said I should shoot with it – it was, of course, far too large (please don’t be too sad about my posture in the photos, I know it isn’t great!) but hey! Now I can say I’ve gone trap shooting. It was pretty fun, though I wasn’t all that good. Nonetheless…cool. After that, we came back, had brunch (as you do) and then I had to go back to California .

Me, leaning way too far back. shhh.

gilbert-stuart
Gilbert Stuart’s memorial tablet on Boston Common. Apparently he was buried there…somewhere, but it was an unmarked grave due to the financial troubles of his family at the time.
