Boston – December 2010

When I took a real position with Nokia (currently HERE), they started my habit of the last few years of heading out to Boston every few months. Most of the more recent ones, I’ve taken few to no photos, but this was my first trip out. It was actually my first trip to Boston in a few years, and I had a really good time, getting a sense of work, and getting to see a lot of friends again.

Hanging out in Maine, as you do.

I flew on a red eye to Boston. I was pretty cracked out when I got there, honestly, and I took a cab to my hotel (the erstwhile Radisson downtown Boston, now the “Revere Hotel”). This was December 13, so I walk into this lobby at 5 AM, and am assaulted by Christmas decor and the scent of cinnamon. My reservation wasn’t actually until that evening, but I went up to the front desk to ask if I could leave my bags there, so I wouldn’t have to carry them around all day.

Much to my surprise, the front desk worker asked me if I wanted to check in. I checked to make sure that it would still be for my reservation that started that evening, and he assured me it was, and he checked me in and sent me up to my room. Up to the 24th floor I went, and found my door right next to the elevator. I walk in through this longish hallway ,and turn into this very very large room. Complete office + couch on one end, and then bed on the other, with a nice view of Boston. I guess it’s the only way they can fill the entire zone behind the elevator bank. I managed to crash for a few hours, before heading off to work for the week.

Work was mostly, well, work, though it was nice to meet people. I headed back to my room one day near the middle of the week, right near sunset, and as I step into the room, I am struck by the view of Boston in front of me, with all the lights coming on, silhouetted against the sky, behind which the sunset is just starting to tint the horizon, and I rush to get my camera.

The rest of the week basically flew by, and I got to see some people, get some work done, and generally enjoy Boston. Good times! At the end of the week, I went with the Tibbetts up to Maine, once they had heard that I had never been up there. We stopped , I believe, at the Kittery Trading Post, just over the border, and then headed a hair further up into the state, to Ogunquit. After stopping at a cafe for some brief food, we went up to the shore. We parked near a small faux lighthouse, and took a nice walk along the Marginal Way Walkway.

after snack!

There was actually someone out stand up paddleboarding just offshore, which takes serious dedication in December in Maine, in my or really anyone else’s opinion. Walking along the shore path, we dropped down to this beach that was covered completely in shells. I rock-hopped for a bit, enjoying watching the waves come in, leaving ice on the rocks

So very many small seashells

We walked up and around and back to the car – all in all a pleasant interlude, adding another state to my count.
