Sturtevant Falls from Chantry Flats

March 18, 2007 we (Joe, Erin, and I) went to Sturtevant Falls, Angeles NF, starting from Chantry Flat , which we were excited to revisit, as it had been closed for several years. The hike wasn’t too long, about 4.5 miles in length, and about 1k’ of climbing total.

It’s a really nice little hike. You park at Chantry Flats and then walk down to the main junction to the Gabrielino trail, and then turn into the canyon proper. There are a lot of cabins there from before the forest was fully organized. Although apparently people can’t live in them year round, so they get more recreational use. Someone certainly seems to be using theirs for some laundry though…

mmm, jammylicious

The hike itself really doesn’t have too many crazy features. You just walk upcanyon until you get to the falls. There are some little dams that are put in, that I always think end up looking like Mayan sort of structures (so sue me, I don’t know my native tribes so well…). There was even some wildlife (we some a couple of deer, and some ducks. It was actually the first deer I had ever seen in the San Gabriels, though they’re not really that uncommon. And I’ve seen a lot elsewhere of course, but this was still sort of fun for me).

We then relaxed at the falls at bit, and walked bit. There was also a sign leading off to another set of falls, Hermit Falls, that I thought we should try and go to see. So we set off that way, but, unfortunately, when we got to the stream that fed that set of falls, we turned the wrong way. So we just ended up back where we started, having made a charming loop with no real purpose. Oh joy! We then walked back up towards the car, and went on home. A nice litttle day.

  1. i like the sign, and also the red longjohns. *smile* thanks for posting more trip photos — they make me want to get out and travel and do that hiking thing. no time for that anytime soon, but i still enjoy thinking about it, and it’s nice to see what you’ve been up to.

  2. yeah, I thought the sign was kind of hilarious, not what one would expect…

I’m trying to get through a backlog of these. Of course, I’m always trying to get through a backlog of these, so we’ll see.

    hope to see you eventually.
